No less than 64 people died in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. Over 80 suspects were arrested.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives stated.

The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "shocked" by the police operation, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of a major illegal networks.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Residents have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Rio's police said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, along with numerous weapons.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are considered participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are currently hiding in the metropolitan area.
