Donald Trump's Actions Constitute a Threat to Civilization.
The internal and external strategies – ranging from the attempted coup five years ago to current moves and statements – weaken both domestic and international jurisprudence. But that’s not all.
They endanger the core idea of civilization itself.
The guiding principle of civilized society is to forestall the stronger from harming and taking advantage of the vulnerable. Failing that, we would be locked in a state of nature where survival of the strongest could survive.
This principle lies at the center of the nation's founding texts. This is also the heart of the postwar international order advocated by the America, emphasizing collective action, popular sovereignty, human rights, and the legal authority.
But, it is a delicate ideal, frequently ignored by those who seek to abuse their influence. Upholding it demands that the powerful have the moral fortitude to abstain from seeking short-term wins, and that the rest of us demand responsibility should they falter.
Unchecked strength is not right. It leads to turmoil, chaos, and conflict.
Every time entities that are wealthier and stronger target and use those that are weaker, the structure of civilization weakens. If these actions are left unchecked, the system fails. Without intervention, the world can descend into disorder and conflict. We have seen this pattern previously.
Today, we live in a international landscape with deepening divides. Influence and wealth are held by fewer hands than ever before. This creates conditions for the powerful to take advantage of the less fortunate because they feel untouchable.
The wealth of a small group of ultra-wealthy individuals is difficult to fathom. The influence of major corporations in technology, energy, and aerospace extends over numerous countries. AI is likely to consolidate wealth and power further. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is unprecedented in recorded history.
Empowered by political allies and a pliant judicial body, the executive office has been made into the most powerful and unaccountable instrument of government in the modern era.
Consider this confluence and you grasp the danger.
A clear connection links past lawless actions to ongoing threats. Both were founded upon the overconfidence of omnipotence.
There is parallel dynamics in the actions of other powers: in wars of aggression, in expansive ambitions, and in the worldwide exploitation by massive conglomerates.
But, strength without restraint does not create right. It fosters uncertainty, upheaval, and war.
History shows that laws and norms to check the powerful also shield them. Without such constraints, their relentless pursuit for increased control and resources eventually lead to their downfall – taking down their enterprises, countries, or domains. And pave the way for world war.
This kind of contempt for legal order will haunt America and the global community – and the very idea of civilized conduct – for years to come.
