The Battle Royale's Specialized Traversal Techniques Are Going Mainstream During This Update

The game developers have an exciting surprise prepared for the popular battle royale players, perfectly timed for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid traversal can rejoice to discover that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when the Amped season launches on November 4th.

Unveiling Mantle Boosting

Dubbed "Mantle Boosting" by Respawn, this feature provides gamers a burst of forward momentum when climbing over ledges and walls. As explained key developer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting was previously existed of the game for quite a while, often called as "mantle jumping." But it's no easy feat for casual gamers, and typically employed by competitive players in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team simplifies the process for players of all skill levels to execute these advanced movement boosts.

"Mantle Boosts have been in the game for a while, but executing it requires skill to perform and a player might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," the designer states. "Now including a visual cue so players can clearly identify when and how to activate the fast-paced movement ability, making accessible the mechanic and introducing new ways to play for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche technique accessible to all players? Lead Legend designer Josh Mohan says the team wants players to feel powerful — even those who are inexperienced.

"[The playerbase] performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafing, and we examined at other games, observed what the community are doing, and we said, 'How can we extend these capabilities to more players?'" the designer explains. "Since currently, some of these advanced [movement] mechanics are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. So we said, 'How about we create a polished version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Mobility is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends Horizon, Rampart, and the aerial combatant all getting buffs to maintain them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will propel users into the air faster than before. Rampart's Amped Cover now include overhead protection and capability to grant speed boosts to allies in range. However the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements now, with various adjustments applied to make her stronger, quicker, and more lethal.

"I think many agree that her moment is here," says Legend designer Ian Holstead. "Certainly that she's been dominant in the past, but with the introduction of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it seemed like she's not very relevant in today's the game. It was a really great opportunity for us to revisit multiple elements in her abilities and essentially bring her back to former prominence."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, the developer notes Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced significant changes. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, boosting velocity during flight, and the jets themselves regenerates three times faster, allowing her to remain longer aloft. Now she won't be harmed from her own Missile Swarm, which has also been upgraded to tag opponents who are hit from it. Her squad redeploy skill — which launches her entire squad skyward for redeployment or escape — requires much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains some new Legend Upgrades that players can choose to conserve resources, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate activation.

"Her jet pack now delivers on the pilot experience," he comments.

Olympus Improvements

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, is getting a movement-friendly overhaul, with major changes that opens up choke points and renders claiming the high ground a bit less daunting. Respawn state the game Season 27 is all about giving players the resources required to keep up with matches.

"Really, we were looking at the game's core identity as a movement shooter," explains principal designer Josh Mohan.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases November 4th at the specified times.
